Jenny Rathbone joins First Minister in wishing luck to Cardiff City

The First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones has wished Cardiff City good luck ahead of this weekend’s Carling Cup final.

He said:

“I wish Cardiff City all the best for this weekend. This is the first time a Welsh club has reached the league cup final and it shows just how strong Welsh football is at the moment.”

I too would like to wish Cardiff the best of luck in this weekends Carling Cup final.

How not to spend £75 billion

Instead of giving the bankers more money to gamble away on the money markets, imagine the Bank of England had invested £75 billion in our manufacturing industries, our green technologies and our railway systems! Lots of jobs created, and a step in the right direction in tackling global warming. “Nothing new will be manufactured, invented or developed as the result of this monetary splurge, no services offered, no businesses founded. Rather the money already in circulation – the money in your bank account, in your purse, under your mattress – will be worth less. The government in other words, is helping itself to your savings.” So says Daniel Hannan, a Conservative MEP. I don’t often agree with Tories but I agree with this.

Pennsylvania Path Problem

On Monday contractors blocked  off the disabled access path between Lincoln Court and  the Maelfa.Eight new family homes are being built on the site of the old shop. This caused uproar from local residents and huge distress to wheelchair users, unable to get to the Maelfa.

On Tuesday Jenny Rathbone AM called a meeting on site with the builders, the developers and Cardiff Council. Following Jenny’s meeting, the path  for wheelchairs and buggies which runs past 308 and 309 Pennsylvania  was reinstated – for now.

Linc Housing Association was  granted planning permission in March 2010. Cardiff Council sold Linc all the land up to and including the wall up to the raised path. As a result, the Council will now have to pay to reduce the height and incline of the raised path and eliminate the steps at the Lincoln Court end to make it safe for wheelchair users. It will be a big and expensive job as lots of essential services are buried under the path. The path will probably have to be closed when and if the path gets fixed. That is unlikely to happen until next year. We’ll keep you posted.

Protest in the Park

Rita Austin from Penylan brought her 6 year old grandson to today’s demonstration againt the Con Dem cuts. He made his own message for David Cameron abundantly clear, as did all the other people who wanted to make sure that both Clegg and Cameron got a rousing reception at their Cardiff  Spring conferences today.

Vulnerable refugee mothers and their babies

Unfortunately I couldnt go to the celebration of a fantastic project in Liverpool supporting mothers who are refugees and their babies. Many have suffered horrendous experiences before arriving in the UK so supporting them through their trauma and their motherhood has been an important research initiative.vulnerable mothers and babies

George Osborne – there is an alternative

George Osborne will be presenting his budget on March 23rd. He has choices. He could stop the slash and burn of our services if he wanted to be raising more taxes.
Tax dodging costs us up to £120bn a year – more than three times what we spend on schools. Companies like Barclays only pay a tiny 1% in tax while libraries, Sure Start Centres and Disability Living Allowance are being cut across the UK. Does George Osborne really think “we’re all in this together”?

As Chancellor, George Osborne should be doing something to close these dodgy tax loopholes. But instead, he’s doing the opposite. He’s scrapped plans that would have made the banks pay more tax. He’s relaxing rules to let UK businesses move money into foreign tax havens to dodge tax. And I’m told he’s even going to benefit from a £1.6m tax dodge himself!
Opinion polls show that people do not wanted to see their local services slashed. Will Osborne take heed?
